Born in 1958 near Lake Constance, Gerhard Rasser found his passion for art during his studies in architecture and art history. His artistic journey began modestly, shaped by the early demands of raising small children and establishing his professional career. This led to a gradual development of his artistic practice, initially characterized by small-format works and frequent interruptions. However, about ten years ago, art became a central focus in his life.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Rasser’s work has gained striking relevance, capturing shared experiences through evocative imagery. His art encapsulates emotional moments, conveying feelings of melancholy, transience, threat, loneliness, alongside longing and hope. These emotions are set against abstract and semi-abstract backgrounds, inviting diverse interpretations and new perspectives. Within these spaces, realistic and hyper-realistic objects emerge, often leading viewers into fantastical worlds that narrate compelling stories. Rasser’s work is distinguished by a blend of old-master precision and modern ambiguity, with emptiness becoming a conceptual space.
Nature frequently inspires his work, with birds symbolizing the unattainable freedom that eludes humanity. Rasser’s art invites contemplation, encouraging viewers to pause and reflect on deeper meanings.
His work has been exhibited at prestigious venues, including the Innsbruck Art Fair (2019) and Artexpo Basel (2023). He published “Stille Wege” and has been a jury member for Enter into Art since 2021, contributing to international art projects. In 2022, he joined the Kunstverein Vorarlberg, solidifying his place in the art community.
